Disenfranchisement laws like the one Proposition 17 would amend disproportionately impact Latinx, Black, and Asian American citizens. In fact, almost 44% of the people who would have their voting rights restored by Proposition 17 are Latinx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voto Latino is the latest endorser to join the growing coalition of<a href=\"https:\/\/traceygeronimo.com\/yo17\/endorsements-3\/\"> more than 400 individuals and organizations<\/a> calling on California voters to say \u2018YES\u2019 on Proposition 17, which includes actress Annie Gonzalez; leading Latinx elected officials like Secretary of State Alex Padilla, former State Senate Pro Tempore Kevin de Le\u00f3n, State Senator Lena A. Gonzalez, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, Assemblymember Jose Medina, Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva, Assemblymember Luz Rivas, City of Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arregu\u00edn, City of Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, and City of San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo; and leading Latinx organizations like Dolores Huerta Foundation, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Mi Familia Vota, and UnidosUS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the beginning of 2020, Voto Latino has doubled down on its grassroots voter registration efforts in Latinx communities across the country, registering more than 1 million voters since May. Approximately 32 million Latinx individuals will be eligible to vote this election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposition 17 is the only ballot initiative in the nation this year that would expand voting rights for formerly incarcerated individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Proposition 17\u2019s approval, California would be among the 19 other states \u2013 both red and blue \u2013 and Washington, D.C., that include citizens who have completed prison terms in their democratic processes. California will also become the first state to restore voting rights via statewide ballot measure since the 2018 passage of Amendment 4 in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one should be denied their constitutional right to vote,\u201d said <strong>Mar\u00eda Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino<\/strong>. \u201cAnyone who has paid their debt to society and begun on the path of rehabilitation and reconciliation should be able to freely cast a ballot and have a say in American democracy.
